Lady Mary is a popular, vigorous climbing shrub known for its spectacular, non-fading bright yellow bracts and green foliage. Ideal for tropical climates, it thrives in full sun, requires well-drained soil, and is highly drought-tolerant once established, blooming heavily from November to May.
Bracts & Flowers: This variety is best known for its vibrant golden-yellow to orange-yellow bracts that often transition in shade as they mature. Some variations under the "Lady Mary" name may also display soft pink or lavender tones. The true flowers are small, white, and tubular, nestled within these colorful bracts.
Growth Habit: It is a fast-growing, woody climbing vine that can reach an ultimate height of 8–12 metres (approx. 26–39 feet) within 2–5 years.
Foliage: Features lush, dark green, oval-shaped leaves that provide a sharp contrast to the bright bracts. Like most bougainvilleas, the stems are armed with thorns
Sunlight Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily) to produce abundant blooms. Insufficient light leads to "leggy" growth and fewer flowers.
Watering: Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant. It prefers deep but infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between sessions to prevent root rot.
Soil: Needs well-drained, sandy, or loamy soil. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–6.0) is ideal.
Pruning: Pruning is essential to maintain shape and encourage new growth, as flowers only bloom on new wood. The best time to prune is in early spring or immediately after a flowering cycle.
